Dalian Welcomes Record Crowd for Northeast Regional Football League Home Opener

More than 4,000 phone flashlights illuminated the night sky before kickoff, forming the glowing message “Northeast GO GO GO” as excitement filled Dalian Suoyu Bay Football Stadium.

On the evening of June 20, Dalian hosted its first home match of the 2026 Northeast Regional City Football League, drawing a record-breaking 62,826 spectators—the highest attendance ever recorded at the stadium.

While the match itself was a fiercely contested Liaoning derby, the event evolved into something much larger than football. It became a citywide celebration that brought together sport, culture, tourism, entertainment, and local businesses, showcasing Dalian’s hospitality and passion to visitors from across Northeast China.

A City Built on Football

Football has long been part of Dalian’s identity, and the home crowd made that unmistakably clear.

The Dalian squad reflected the league’s grassroots spirit, featuring local high school students alongside everyday residents—including a food delivery driver on the bench. Every challenge, tackle, and attack embodied the city’s enduring football culture.

As kickoff approached, chants of “Dalian! Dalian!” echoed throughout the packed stadium while thousands more gathered across the city to watch outdoor broadcasts, transforming the evening into a celebration that extended far beyond the stadium gates.

Mountains, Sea, and Matchday Entertainment

Before the match, a spectacular laser show projected the image of the mythical Kunpeng, a giant bird from Chinese mythology, soaring above the pitch. A 130-piece marching orchestra performed Sea Breeze Concerto, creating a dramatic opening ceremony inspired by Dalian’s coastal landscape.

Outside the stadium, the Northeast Super Carnival attracted crowds with waterfront activities, food vendors, live entertainment, and interactive experiences. Visitors enjoyed the city’s seaside boardwalks, evening markets, and fresh ocean breeze, giving traveling supporters far more than just a football match.

A Warm Welcome for Visiting Fans

Dalian also demonstrated its reputation for hospitality by introducing several initiatives to make the experience easier for visiting supporters.

To accommodate approximately 1,320 fans traveling from Jiangsu, the city adjusted ferry schedules and added sailings across the Bohai Sea. More than 200 volunteer vehicles provided complimentary transportation for out-of-town visitors, while 113 “Lian Xiaoli” service stations offered luggage storage, emergency supplies, tourist information, and other assistance.

Additional incentives included free admission to selected attractions, hotel discounts, and more than 10 million yuan in government-issued consumer vouchers to encourage visitors to explore the city throughout the weekend.

The evening highlighted more than the competition on the field—it showcased Dalian itself.

From record-breaking attendance and waterfront celebrations to coordinated hospitality efforts across the city, the event demonstrated how football can serve as a catalyst for tourism, local commerce, and regional connection.
